I’m Elle, owner of Brisbane Resume Writer. When you engage my services, you work directly with me, not junior writers, offshore contractors, or AI-led tools. I analyse the role requirements carefully, address the selection criteria as required, and position your attributes and experience so they withstand scrutiny and present your leadership credentials clearly and credibly.

AI led resume writing often leaves you sounding generic, keyword stuffed, foreign, or poorly aligned to the role. Employers and ATS can spot it a country mile off.

About the C-Suite Package

An effective executive resume is closer to a targeted strategic document than a career summary. It is not about listing everything you have done, but about selecting and framing the experience that matters most to the employer.
  • Selection criteria audit

The process begins by identifying what the employer is genuinely seeking, both what is stated and what is implied. This establishes the strategic direction for the entire application.
  • Understanding the employer

Beyond the role description, the organisation itself is examined, including its leadership culture, priorities, sector dynamics, and current pressures. This context informs how your experience is positioned.
  • Skills and alignment analysis

Your leadership style, track record, and outcomes are assessed against the selection criteria. Strengths are foregrounded, while gaps or sensitivities are addressed carefully and strategically.
  • Executive resume drafting

Insights from the earlier stages are translated into a resume written for senior decision makers, using language, structure, and emphasis appropriate to executive appointment.
  • Refinement and polish

The document is refined for clarity, impact, and alignment, ensuring it reads with authority and withstands detailed scrutiny.
  • Supporting materials and online presence

Cover letters, executive bios, and LinkedIn profiles are aligned so the narrative is consistent, credible, and defensible across all touchpoints.
  • Submission strategy

The final application is prepared as a coherent package designed to maximise the likelihood of being shortlisted for interview.
While each executive engagement is tailored in practice, this outlines the typical strategic approach used for senior leadership and C-suite applications.

This illustration is indicative only. Where no specific role is being targeted, sector or role-level criteria may be used as a proxy, although this is always less effective than applying for a defined position.

What Is A 'Master CV'?

Think of this as your strategic playbook for navigating a competitive executive market. More...

A Master CV captures your full career history, achievements, credentials, and leadership experience in one place. It serves as a strategic reference, enabling you to respond quickly and decisively by aligning each application to the priorities of a specific employer. This is particularly valuable if you are exploring new opportunities, considering sector transitions, or preparing for board level roles.

What Is a Master CV?

A Master CV is a comprehensive working document that records your complete professional background. It is never sent directly to employers. Instead, it forms the foundation for creating targeted executive resumes, board applications, LinkedIn profiles, and capability statements. By consolidating everything in one place, valuable achievements and experience are not overlooked when opportunities arise.

Why create a Master CV?

  • Responsiveness – Move quickly when opportunities emerge, without reconstructing your career history from memory.
  • Targeted applications – Select and refine the most relevant experience and achievements for each specific role.
  • Career clarity – Step back periodically to review progress, identify capability gaps, and plan the next stage of your career.
  • Wider application – Draw on the document when preparing board profiles, consultancy proposals, or capability statements.

Challenges a Master CV Addresses

⇒ Reactive applications

Many executives respond late to opportunities, submitting rushed or generic applications. At senior level, employers expect clear alignment with the organisation’s strategic priorities rather than a broad career summary.

⇒ Presenting transferable leadership capability

Moving between sectors or mandates can be difficult to explain convincingly. A Master CV provides the space to identify transferable leadership capability and frame it clearly against different selection criteria.

⇒ Positioning achievements for impact

Executive accomplishments rarely speak for themselves. A Master CV allows achievements to be recorded with proper context, making it far easier to align them with the priorities of different employers.

For senior executives, this approach enables you to:

  • Frame results, not responsibilities – Outcomes, decisions, and strategic impact matter more than job descriptions.
  • Demonstrate transferability – Clearly connect your leadership experience to new environments or mandates.
  • Respond strategically – Move decisively on high value opportunities without starting from scratch.
  • Avoid generic applications – Produce targeted, role specific documents aligned with employer expectations.

As my book The C-Suite Interview Playbook explains, relevance to selection criteria, both explicit and implied, is often the defining factor in executive shortlisting. A Master CV supports a disciplined, prepared approach to presenting your value and securing interviews.

Phase two – Application alignment

  • Opportunity assessment – Advice on which roles to pursue and how to prioritise them.
  • Targeted applications – Creation of tailored executive resumes and cover letters for two specific roles.
  • Pitch development – Development of clear, relevant elevator pitches aligned to each opportunity.
  • LinkedIn strategy – Refinement of your profile to strengthen visibility and credibility.
  • Ongoing support – Continued guidance across live applications and broader career decisions.

I can only schedule Executive projects after I have been retained. If you need to address complex selection criteria, please allow at least a week ahead of the closing date.

Building an effective resume is not simply about securing the next role. It is about shaping, refining, and taking ownership of your professional narrative. Employers do not value every skill or experience equally. When a resume gives everything the same emphasis, its strongest assets lose impact. Real influence comes from aligning your story with the priorities that matter most to the employer.

How do I engage you to author my CV?

Most clients begin with a phone conversation to discuss options and understand how I work. More...

This allows me to learn about your career background, the types of roles you are considering, and any immediate opportunities or constraints that may shape the strategy.

This initial discussion is practical and exploratory. I outline how I approach executive and professional applications, what information I will need from you, and how we can position your experience so it aligns with the expectations of senior decision makers and selection panels.
If you decide to proceed, you simply select the relevant package and complete payment by card, or request an invoice for bank transfer. Once confirmed, we schedule a detailed consultation where we review your career history, achievements, leadership scope, and the types of roles you wish to pursue.

From there I analyse the role requirements, selection criteria where applicable, and the broader organisational context. Your resume, CV, and supporting documents are then developed and refined through consultation until the final material presents your experience clearly, credibly, and in a way that stands up to scrutiny from employers or executive search firms.

How might you give me an advantage?

I emphasise the outcomes and impact of your work, not just your job history. More...

An achievement led CV

Your CV is structured around outcomes and impact rather than a chronology of roles. The emphasis is on what you delivered, why it mattered, and how it positions you for the role ahead.

The value you bring

Your CV demonstrates the value you contribute to an organisation, showing how your judgement, experience, and leadership support stronger decisions, improved performance, and sustained results at senior level.

Your approach to complex problems

A clear narrative is developed around how you have managed complex challenges, led through change, and resolved high stakes issues, combining strategic thinking with sound people judgement.

Your financial accountability

Financial responsibility is evidenced through outcomes such as revenue growth, cost management, investment decisions, and transformation initiatives, grounded in organisational and stakeholder impact.

Your capacity for innovation

Innovation is demonstrated through examples of improvement initiatives, forward thinking decisions, and your ability to translate ideas into practical outcomes while bringing others with you.

Your leadership and influence

Leadership is presented through outcomes and behaviour, showing how you build capability, communicate clearly, and influence across diverse stakeholders, rather than relying on title alone.

Your professional standards

Professional credibility is reinforced through consistent delivery, sound governance, and the ability to lift performance across teams, systems, and results, positioning you as a leader trusted to operate at senior level.

How do I select a resume or CV package?

Some roles specify what employers require. Many do not. More...

At senior level, competition is rarely about experience alone. Executive roles typically attract a large pool of both capable and less suitable applicants, and initial screening is often automated before any human review occurs. Many executives assume a broad career summary will suffice. In practice, if your resume does not align clearly with the selection criteria, explicit or implied, it may not progress beyond the first screening stage.

Executive CV Elements

Most executive applications are built around three core components: the resume or CV, the cover letter or e note, and LinkedIn.

  • Resume or CV – A concise, strategically structured account of your leadership experience, achievements, and scope of responsibility, aligned closely with the priorities of the role.
  • Cover letter – Usually submitted digitally, this distils your experience into a focused executive pitch that speaks directly to the organisation’s mandate and expectations.
  • Addressing selection criteria – Many executive roles do not list criteria explicitly, requiring judgement and research to identify what matters most. Where stated, responses may be required within the cover letter or as a separate document.
    • Most state and federal government roles require a stand alone selection criteria statement.
Even when criteria are not formally listed, your application should still demonstrate clear alignment with what the organisation values. Strategic relationships, sector credibility, or influence across stakeholders may be decisive factors even if they are not stated in the job advertisement.

The role of the cover letter and LinkedIn

Both the cover letter and LinkedIn profile reinforce the positioning established in your resume. At executive level, LinkedIn is particularly important as it supports professional visibility, credibility, the breadth and calibre of your network, and executive search activity in markets where reputation and relationships play a significant role.

What exactly are selection criteria?

The role description outlines what the employer needs, but it rarely tells the full story. More...

Selection criteria describe the qualifications, experience, capabilities, values, accomplishments, and personal attributes an employer uses to determine who progresses to interview. Unlike a job description, which outlines duties, selection criteria focus on what a candidate must demonstrate to be shortlisted.
Selection criteria are sometimes, though not always, set out in the job advertisement or role description. They act as the benchmark used to assess suitability and signal what the organisation genuinely values. For executives, this alignment matters, as it reflects not only capability but also fit with strategy, culture, and leadership expectations.

Common selection criteria in corporate and executive leadership roles

  • Leadership capability – Demonstrated leadership and accountability for organisational performance and results.
  • Strategic judgement – Sound decision making supported by commercial awareness and long term strategic thinking.
  • Commercial and financial accountability – Responsibility for budgets, revenue, cost management, and investment decisions.
  • Stakeholder influence – Ability to build trust and influence across boards, senior executives, investors, partners, and clients.
  • Delivery and execution – Proven capacity to translate strategy into operational outcomes and sustained business performance.
  • Innovation and growth – Evidence of leading innovation, market expansion, or organisational growth.
  • Global or cross cultural perspective – International or cross cultural leadership experience where relevant.
  • Proven achievements – Clear evidence of accomplishments with measurable organisational impact.

Common selection criteria in senior public sector, NFP, and regulated roles

  • Leadership and organisational capability – Demonstrated leadership and responsibility for delivering outcomes through teams and programs.
  • Strategic policy or sector insight – Ability to interpret complex policy, regulatory, or sector environments and provide sound strategic advice.
  • Governance and integrity – Strong commitment to governance, accountability, ethical conduct, and public trust.
  • Stakeholder engagement – Ability to work effectively with ministers, boards, community stakeholders, regulators, and partner organisations.
  • Program delivery and outcomes – Proven ability to deliver complex initiatives, programs, or reforms with measurable impact.
  • Change and transformation leadership – Experience leading organisational change, reform agendas, or service transformation.
  • People and culture leadership – Ability to build capability, develop teams, and foster inclusive organisational cultures.
  • Public value and community impact – Evidence of delivering outcomes that create lasting benefit for communities or stakeholders.
Selection criteria may also be described as job specifications, position requirements, or competency frameworks. Regardless of the label, they define both the technical expectations and behavioural standards required for the role.

The challenge with interpreting selection criteria

Do not rely solely on the job advertisement when interpreting selection criteria. Role descriptions are often drafted by HR or remuneration teams and may not fully reflect the priorities of decision makers. In practice, the minimum stated requirements are often the most reliable guide. Where possible, insight from recruiters or trusted professional contacts can help clarify what truly matters.

Selection Criteria Statements

In Australia, many public and third sector roles require applicants to address selection criteria in a separate, stand alone document. These statements form part of the formal assessment process and are used to evaluate skills, experience, and suitability.

Roles that commonly require selection criteria statements include:

  • Government roles – Federal, state, and local government positions across policy, administration, and program delivery.
  • Public service roles – Positions in health, education, justice, and social services.
  • Education sector – Universities, TAFEs, and other education providers, particularly academic and professional staff roles.
  • Healthcare sector – Many public health and community health appointments.
  • Not for profit organisations – Roles funded by government or operating under formal governance frameworks.
Addressing selection criteria requires clear examples demonstrating how your experience meets each requirement. These examples allow employers to assess capability, judgement, and leadership against defined standards and often play a decisive role in determining who progresses to interview.

What is your resume creation process?

We work together to align your application with the employer’s selection criteria and priorities. More...

  • Start with the employer’s priorities

The process begins by analysing the role requirements and selection criteria, both explicit and implied. This ensures the application is built around what matters most to the decision makers.
  • Position your experience

Your leadership experience, judgement, and achievements are assessed against the criteria so strengths are emphasised and any gaps are addressed carefully and credibly.
  • Prepare the first draft

Using this analysis, I prepare the first draft of your resume, focusing on outcomes, strategic impact, and relevance rather than a simple chronology of roles.
  • Review and refine

We review the draft together, refining structure, language, and emphasis so the narrative aligns closely with the employer’s expectations.
  • Supporting materials

Where required, I prepare cover letters, selection criteria responses, and LinkedIn updates so your positioning is consistent across all application materials.
  • Application ready

The final documents are reviewed for clarity, accuracy, and alignment with the role before delivery, ensuring they are ready for immediate submission.
This approach is designed to strengthen your prospects of securing interviews by aligning your profile closely with employer expectations and presenting a clear, defensible case for appointment. While each engagement is tailored, it reflects the core methodology used for executive applications.
Where no specific role is being targeted, sector or role level criteria may guide the build. This supports broader positioning, although it is generally less effective for executive appointments than preparing a role specific application.

My accomplishment checklist

An effective executive resume demonstrates your ability to deliver measurable outcomes. More...

An effective executive resume highlights significant, measurable achievements rather than listing duties or responsibilities.

Personal action accomplishments

Consider the constraints and challenges you have faced from an employer’s perspective. Reflect on problems you resolved, risks you mitigated, or opportunities you recognised and acted upon.

Using the PAR technique

The Problem, Action, Result framework converts experience into evidence. It demonstrates the situation you addressed, the action you took, and the measurable outcome achieved, linking your contribution directly to employer priorities.

1. Financial accomplishments

Identify actions that increased revenue, reduced costs, improved margins, or lifted productivity. This may include growth strategies, operational improvements, or turnaround activity.

2. Innovative accomplishments

Highlight where you introduced new approaches, services, technologies, or strategies, demonstrating foresight, adaptability, and the ability to lead meaningful change.

3. Leadership and interpersonal accomplishments

Show how you built effective teams, resolved complex issues, strengthened engagement, or led major initiatives, reinforcing your leadership judgement and influence.

4. Quality and added value accomplishments

Consider improvements to governance, systems, training, recruitment, product quality, or customer outcomes that raised standards or delivered lasting organisational value.
Alternatives to STAR, including PAR, CAR, SOAR, SCAR, SAO, OAR, and DAR, provide flexible frameworks for articulating executive achievements. Each emphasises a slightly different lens, such as problem, opportunity, or challenge, allowing you to present outcomes clearly and with appropriate context. Used well, these models support concise, credible, and interview ready storytelling.

How to Stuff Up Your Job Application

Applied for plenty of roles and hearing little or nothing back?More...

To improve your chances of being shortlisted, focus on a resume that is clear, relevant to the role, and structured to work with ATS screening rather than against it.
This is where many applications fail.

⇒ Ignoring the ATS

Applicant Tracking Systems are the first hurdle for most roles. A large proportion of resumes are filtered out at this stage because they do not align closely enough with the employer’s selection criteria. Generic resumes are usually the first to be screened out.

⇒ The obviously AI application

Over relying on generative AI can weaken senior applications. While AI can accelerate drafting and tidy language, it often misses nuance, judgement, and organisational context. The result is content that reads as formulaic, skims over selection criteria, and overlooks cultural fit, all critical considerations at executive level.

AI generated applications can also create a gap between what is written and how you present at interview, raising questions about authenticity. As employers become more adept at recognising formulaic or robotic language, clearly AI led applications are increasingly filtered out or treated with caution.

Used carefully, AI can improve efficiency. Used carelessly, it undermines credibility. Strong executive applications still depend on human judgement, context, and a clearly personal voice.

⇒ The generic resume trap

Submitting the same resume for every role is a frequent mistake. Each application should be tailored to the position, demonstrating clear relevance between your experience and what the employer is seeking.

⇒ Missing the job requirements

If your resume does not reflect the skills, experience, and outcomes described in the job advertisement or role specification, it is likely to be overlooked. Employers expect to see a clear match rather than assumptions.

⇒ Over designed resumes

Highly stylised resumes may look impressive but often fail in practice. Complex layouts, columns, graphics, and colours can confuse ATS software and trigger automatic rejection. Many organisations also discourage photographs to reduce bias concerns.

Hitting the sweet spot with your Resume

Board-level Resume Writer

Selection criteria may not be explicitly stated in a job description, but addressing them is crucial if you are to align your application to the employer's needs, requirements, and circumstances.

  1. Your attributes: The first circle represents your (the applicant's) knowledge, achievements, and skills
  2. Job description: The second circle represents the employer's strategic and operational needs in filling the post
  3. The market: The third circle represents the broader trends and challenges facing the employer's industry

This succinctly illustrates why each senior executive resume and its accompanying documentation must be tailored to an employer's requirements, needs, and situation. Venn and the art of the CV (Bradshaw, Edwards 2022).

Resume alignment with selection criteria

  • Selection criteria analysis

We begin by identifying what the employer is truly seeking, including both explicit and implied criteria. These requirements shape the entire application.
  • Understanding the organisation

Organisational priorities, leadership expectations, and sector conditions are considered to ensure your application reflects the environment you are entering.
  • Capability alignment

Your experience, achievements, and leadership approach are assessed against employer priorities, identifying where to lead with evidence and where careful positioning is needed.
  • Executive resume build

Using the earlier analysis, the resume is structured to foreground relevant achievements and demonstrate clear alignment with the role.
  • Refinement and emphasis

The draft is refined for clarity, emphasis, and coherence, ensuring the narrative presents a persuasive and credible case.
  • Supporting documents and profile alignment

Cover letters and online profiles are aligned where required, ensuring consistency and credibility across all application touchpoints.
  • Submission readiness

Your application is finalised for submission, ensuring it meets stated requirements and demonstrates clear relevance to the role.
This process is adapted to each client and role, with the aim of presenting a clear, well aligned case for capability and fit, rather than a generic career summary.

Aligning your Resume

Tailor your resume to the prospective employer's specific needs and demonstrate how your accomplishments align with their requirements. Providing concrete examples with metrics strengthens your case and enhances your chances of securing an interview.

  1. Your attributes: The first circle represents your (the applicant's) knowledge, achievements, and skills
  2. Job description: The second circle represents the employer's strategic and operational needs in filling the post
  3. The market: The third circle represents the broader trends and challenges facing the employer's industry

With more than fifteen years’ experience across recruitment and executive resume strategy, I understand what works, what fails, and why.

Client Testimonials

Hi Elle, I just want to say thank you for the work you did to make my resume application for the CEO (of the major sporting body here in WA)* stand out. It has been a pleasure working and interacting with you during the process. You answered every question, right down to - what format should I send the application in. I would have got it very wrong, but you referred me back to the job ad and showed me what to do next, your patience with my obvious lack of knowledge of how to do these things is very much appreciated as I know I would have never gotten to the interview, despite being well known in the sporting world.

I've been living and travelling abroad for years, but had to come "home" because of COVID. Knowing I needed to get a job, and not having the first clue about putting together a Resume and job application for Government positions (I'm an ex-copper and worked at the dept of immigration) I trawled the internet and came across your site. From the first conversation, and then the meeting we had, I knew I had picked the right person to help me. And you did - great news I am now through to final interviews with the agency. The process has been long-winded but you have been there every step of the way, even down to the panic phone call when my browser got stuck and I couldn't upload the application, you talked me down off my panic tree and walked me through the steps. Couldn't have done it without you.

- A.P. (Law Enforcement)

Just wanted to let you know that the resume and cover letter were fantastic and we’ve had interview one, with interview two next week! This is going to be such a game changer for us as a family. While we have a very successful business at the moment, working as a Franchisee for one of the Premier Fast Food Brands* has been our ultimate goal and we would not have gotten this far without your help. We know there will be other requirements for your assistance as we move through the process, and I want to thank you in advance for helping us get to where we want to be at this point in our careers. Thanks again Elle and speak soon.

I honestly cannot speak highly enough of Elle’s exceptional work. After numerous failed attempts with online CV services using poor formatting and obvious AI content, Elle was a breath of fresh air. She created a CV, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile that finally got me past ATS screening and in front of recruiters. Within a couple of months I secured an excellent contracting role. Elle has since updated my CV again as my contract ended, and I am confident I will secure my next role quickly with her in my corner. Thank you for the support and hard work during what has been the toughest job market I have experienced in 31 years.
